San Diego Sea to Sea Trail Volunteer Program

You have selected a powerful way to contribute your experience and talent to help improve the environment, educate our community and have a great adventure at the same time.

There are many ways to volunteer. Choose one that meets your skills and interests. Here are some ideas.

Volunteer Opportunities

Hard at work in Los Penasquitos Canyon Reserve. Photo: Joseph Shelley. We have a variety of volunteer positions, both on and off the Trail. Trail work involves hiking into the back country and doing such things as clearing brush, moving rocks, shoveling dirt, posting signs, putting up barriers, removing trash, delivering food and constructing alternative shelters, horse-watering stations and rest benches.

Off the Trail back at Base, we have opportunities for those keen to promote the San Diego Sea to Sea Trail within their own communities.  The Trail’s fundraisers, office staff and Web site need talented volunteer teachers, coaches, learners and supporters to ensure the Trail is built and maintained, and becomes an internationally recognized conservation and educational resource.

San Diego Sea to Sea Trail Volunteers are Communicators

Yes, I want to get involved. Tell me what opportunities you have for me:

Los Penasquitos diggers, Bill Witzell (left) and Terry Gaughen, hard at workDiggers are those volunteers who are keen to get out on the Trail to help build and maintain it.

Scouts volunteers help answer phones, prepare mailings, work on flyers, filing (yuk), typing and shipping.

Pathfinders help set up fundraising events, give talks at schools and to community groups and help promote the Trail at local, national and international fairs and events.

Trailblazers and Trail Guardians teach, lead trail projects, design alternative environmentally sound trail experiments and educational projects. Artists, graphic designers, public relations experts, historians, photographers, biologists, educators, accountants, architects, attorneys and engineers collaborate with community members and volunteers that wish to participate and learn more about the opportunities the San Diego Sea to Sea Trail provides. Trailblazers work on specific team projects and are educators and supporters of the student learners, as well as learners and leaders on other projects.

Regional Trail Managers take responsibility for the section of the Trail that passes through their region. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers in seven regions, who will ‘keep an eye out’ for any developments happening on or around the Trail, media mentions in local papers, and represent us at local meetings, fairs and events. You would have full support from the Foundation Office, so there’s no need to feel out on your own! You could also join us at our Regional Managers’ meetings – a great way to meet like-minded people! The regions are:

  • Torrey Pines
  • Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve
  • Poway and San Vicente Reservoir
  • Wildcat Canyon to El Cajon Mountain
  • Cleveland National Forest, Palomar Ranger District
  • Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
  • Borrego Springs
  • Anza-Borrego Desert
  • Salton Sea.

Our Application Form also has opportunities for

  • Family Applications
  • Business Volunteer Program
  • California Schools Community Service Credit
